Custom decal design service example:
Arie Luyendijk Lola T93, 1993 season

A customer wanted decals for most cars of the 1993 Indycar season, eleven in total. The models were 1/18 scale diecasts. This project was the largest assignment that I took on, I spent 120 hours. On this page I will show one of these cars.

Reference photos

The customer sent a CD full of photos from the 1993 season, including fourteen of the Luyendijk car. A random photo is shown here. As you can see, the car has an enormous amount of sponsor markings.
Close-up photos were rare, but very useful for designing the decals.

Artwork development

Because the project was so involved, and nearly all cars were Lola T93s, it was worthwhile to first develop templates of the diecast model. It included both the small speedway wings and the large road course wings. I subsequently used this as the sketchboard for all markings.
I remember spending quite a bit of time on the Planter's peanut on the nose cone. All that work for a decal of just a few millimeters. But it surely looked sweet!

Colors were limited to the ones that an Alps could print without dithering. But this limitation was not too bad, except for warm yellow, that was near impossible.

Result

Here's the resulting decal set, with the decals grouped per area on the car. From memory, I spent 14 hours on this car, above average because of the number of markings.

The decals were printed on an Alps by the late Colin King. I don't have a photo of the printed sheet, since it was sent directly to the custom builder, Ralph Simpson.

Much later I obtained a 1/20 scale decal sheet for the same car, by UMi ModellWerke (Mike Quarterman, deceased in 2021). It was really interesting to compare notes, so to say.
Here's a photo of the expertly painted and decaled diecast model, by Ralph Simpson. I think it's my favorite among the eleven cars I did the decals for.

All in all it was a great project. I still enjoy looking at the artwork of all these cars. And maybe I'll build the same car in 1/20 scale myself, one day.
