After buying the super detailed but very difficult to build Sukhoi 15 by VES, I developed an interest in obscure Russian / Ukrainian scale model brands. YuMTK was mentioned sometimes, but weekly Ebay searches yielded almost nothing. In 2025, I obtained two of their injection molded models, the Su-17M-3 and the Yak-28L. I decided to dedicate a webpage to this brand. |
No information was found so far on the meaning of the company name YuMTK.
Lacking anything better, I'll quote John Burns from his book PAK-20: "Vasil Kovskoe started this company in 1992. Early kits were vacuum-formed but injection-molded kits were added in 1995. Production likely ended by 2000. Alternate spelling in English of the company name is JUMTK." Only seven models are listed. Note that 'Vasil Kovskoe' could be a misinterpretation of 'Vasilkovsky', see the address analysis at the end of this page.
Small variations of the logo were used. The rough printing of the instruction sheets makes it difficult to decipher the letters, and the diagional split of the letters makes it even harder. Hence I redrew them the best I could. One variation that's puzzling is one with 'YuMT' instead of 'YuMTK', on the instruction sheets of (at least) the injection-molded Su-17M-3 and Sukhoi 2.
I have no idea how complete the list below is; all except four are listed on Scalemates. I included every snippet I could find in the 'other references' column, however I didn't do many web searches in Cyrillic.

All instruction sheets have a roughly similar address label. I scanned the one of the Yak-28L kit:

UkraineI deciphered the information as follows:
255130 looks like the Soviet-era postal code (that were six digits), no longer used. Vasilkov currently has postal codes in the 8600 — 8612 range
Vasilkov is a town south-west of Kyiv. Vasilkov is also home to the 'Vasilkov Military Aviation Technical School' that has a nice collection of older Soviet military aircraft, out in the open. Here's the location: 50°11'44.59"N 30°18'53.67"E. One then starts to think or hope that the YuMTK models are based on the aircraft present at the school?
I'm puzzled by 'Vasilkovsky Rus', is that the name of the recipient? Or another reference to the city of Vasilkov? I did some Google searching on the surname, but Google hardly knows what to make of it. 'Vasilkovsky' is a Eastern European surname, but not a common one it seems. Forebears reports: "Approximately 456 people bear this surname". Does 'Rus' mean the recipient is Russian?
